1. Introduction Education evolves with greater knowledge of the field, social contexts, institutions and political ideologies. The trend over the last couple of decades has been toward a neoliberal approach to education (Meadmore, 2004; Welch, 2010; Thompson Harbaught, 2013). While proponents of this system have suggested it is without values (Hill Kumar, 2008), this is not the case. Therefore, it is important to address the why and what of neoliberal values in the context of education. It is also important to recognise the negative impacts of neoliberalism on education and ways in which it can be mitigated. 2. Why neoliberalism has permeated education Neoliberalism rose to prominence in education following its rise in economic†¦show more content†¦Perhaps the best example of these principles coming together is in independent primary schools. At this time, neoliberalism extends into the everyday management practices of school administrations. Much of this has been declared as a way of enhancing efficiency and accountability (Welch, 2010). Likewise, the comparisons of schools, performance-based funding, and compliance-based funding are neoliberal policies. These policies have proven problematic in education in three distinct areas: marketisation, managerialism, and the knowledge economy (Welch, 2010). Therefore, each of these areas needs to be addressed to understand the impact of neoliberalism on Australian education. 4. Who are the stakeholders? As with most institutions, vested interests have a hand in shaping education. There are more stakeholders in education with differing views on how education should run than in the past (Meadmore, Burnett O’Brien, 1999). Education is driven by internal and external agendas (Meadmore et al., 1999), but the neoliberal agenda is a mostly external influence. In the Australian context, neoliberal policy is supported by a broad middle spectrum of politics (Forsey, 2008). Hill and Kumar’s (2008) identify the capitalist class and business as stakeholders.
